Welcome to The Tuesday Musicale of Detroit's new website. In this entry, we will describe the purpose of the website, why there is a login capability and what the various classes of login credentials allow, and other aspects of the website. The prior website is accessible here.
The purpose of the new website is to make it a more effective and flexible resource for the organization for its increasingly Internet-saavy new members and student league candidates. The site is constructed using a modern "Content Management System" that facilitates the addition of new content by non-technicians, to create what we hope will be a dynamic information resource for the organization, its members, the general public, and in particular Student League candidates and members.
The website is accessible by anyone without logging in, but there is a capability for various classes of user logins. A non-logged in user obtains access to all parts of the web that are not restricted for some reason (currently nothing is restricted). Any user may register simply by providing an email address, providing that user with the status of an "authorized user," which means receiving any email correspondence that is not restricted to members, such as announcements of upcoming events. Another class of login is a "Performing Member," which is a regular member of The Tuesday Musical of Detroit (as opposed to a non-performing Associate Member). Performing Members may be further identified as being available for private concerts, using our new "Performer Referral Service." A third class of login is "Editor," which means the user may edit specific sections of the website. Login classes are not exclusive, meaning a user may have several roles. For instance, our Student League Advisor Velda Kelly, when logged in, is a Performing Member (also flagged as being available for private performances), and is also an Editor. Another feature of the site is handling events, which may be entered and automatically show up on the Calendar, and the user may select to see all events or Tuesday Musicale events (excluding SL events).
A separate login class is for Student League members. At present no elements of the website are unique to users logged in as Student League, but this is planned for the future, to permit the Student League membership to exist as a subset within the overall website. Among the additions planned for the Student League section are additional photographs, as well as profiles of Student League alumni, beginning with Mr. Erik Asgeirsson, who has provided a very nice collection of images outlining his musical carreer since his SL days.
The website has been created through an intense development effort by Mr. Chris Peplin, a recent graduate of one of the country's best information technology schools, Carnegie Mellon University's graduate school. A number of Tuesday Musicale members have assisted in the project, with special appreciation to Mr. Eric Winter, Mr. Tom Young and Ms. Velda Kelly. Recognition is also due our initial website developer, Mr. Robert Stead, for many years of support..
